I am writing this at Gate B14 in the Sarasota airport. Next to me are Scottie and our amazing Production Stage Manager Jeff. The CLOWNS LIKE ME Off-Broadway adventure is well and truly begun!
Also, you’re probably noticing the tweaks in appearance and aesthetic. As I mentioned last week, I have migrated this newsletter (and the podcast!) to Substack. This has a LOT of benefits, especially for the podcast—and the next Page&Stage Podcast episode will land in your inbox first thing Monday morning!
But no platform is perfect, and I sweated long and hard over the decision to migrate. I go into way more detail on the ABOUT page, so I encourage you to check that out if you’re curious.
The biggest wrinkle is that you’re going to see that “upgrade to paid” button quite often. Substack is, shall we say, assertive about slapping that button all over the place. But that’s because they only make money from my content if I make money first.
SO LET ME BE SUUUUUPER CLEAR.
All Page&Stage content—both Friday newsletters and Monday podcasts—are FREE and will remain so for all time, hallelujah and kumbaya.
If you decide to support me with a paid membership (and big gratitude in advance!), the only difference is you’ll get to access the comments and open threads, where I hope we have some lively and rambunctious discussions about stories and creativity and writing and performance.
I am keeping that aspect of things behind the paywall for a very specific reason: it prevents invasion by bots, trolls, and people who use comments sections to bully and demean others. Without a paywall, comments and threads turn into abrasive thunderdomes. No fun.
The paywall will also let me jettison people who get mean. All are forewarned. :)
BUT LET ME AGAIN BE SUUUUUPER CLEAR.
We authors have the option to give out complimentary subscriptions. The power!!
So if a Substack membership isn’t in the cards for you, for whatever reason, then hit me up on email at jason@pageandstage.art and let me know you want to join the Page&Stage community. We’ll figure something out. I’d rather have you participating than hanging outside the paywall with the trolls, bots, and bullies.
The newest memoir from IBIS BOOKS launched yesterday!
If you love backstage stories, grab this book and tuck in.
You can grab the ebook at IBIS BOOKS or the paperback at AMAZON.
But don’t just take my word for it.
"I loved it! While enlightening us to the histories of our beloved Broadway theaters, Dan tells of his funny personal encounters with the many stars who passed through his stage door, giving us a fun, fast read that shares with us his dedication to and love of theatre."
—Tony Award-winning Broadway Legend Priscilla López
And in a lovely bit of fate-alignment, Dan’s play HAPPY DALE also just had its world premiere at The Players. It runs through June 23, and tickets are available HERE.
Finally—before they call my section to board!—after David Sitler’s podcast episode dropped last week, certain people heard of it, and provided pictorial evidence of the wild assertions David made about Spiderman showing up at his wedding.
Buckle up. This is amaaaaaazing.
So, if you missed David’s episode last week, seriously go check it out. You can listen right HERE.
Wish Scottie, Jeff, and me luck as we fly northward! And if there are any typos this week, apologies, it’s just cuz I’m working on a tablet in an airport!!
