Since not everyone can get to New York this summer, we are bringing New York to you.
That’s right. In case you’ve missed the last, oh, eighteen times I’ve mentioned this—because WOW is it exciting—CLOWNS LIKE ME is heading Off-Broadway this summer.
But both as a thank-you to our Sarasota audience and supporters, and also to give Scottie a chance to polish up his performance to a high sheen before we head north, we are doing five sneak peek performances of our humorous and heartfelt (and award-winning!) show next week.
That would be Thursday, May 23 through Sunday, May 26. And tickets would be RIGHT HERE.
Sure, you may have seen the show last year. But as a playwright I’ve made a few greedy tweaks to the text. And as a director I’ve bumped up the level of the set, sound, and staging. And if rehearsals are any indication, Scottie is taking his level of truth-telling to a new and deliciously exquisite level.
Here’s an article in SARASOTA MAGAZINE that breaks it down even further.
Bonus! My next podcast guest is leading the CLOWNS talkback on Friday, May 24.
As I mentioned last week, May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, so I’m doing a three-week series of podcast episodes with guests who use storytelling to kick mental illness stigma right in the you-know-what.
This week my guest is director, playwright, and anti-stigma advocate Sean Daniels. He also just had a show run in New York, THE WHITE CHIP, which is his semi-autobiographical play that traces his journey to sobriety.
We have a wide-ranging convo, but one of my favorite things he says is that doing shows like CLOWNS and WHITE CHIP is totally punk rock. The context matters here, so give the episode a listen.
Then spike your hair, put on your studded collar and leather vest, and come meet Sean in person when he leads the talkback after the Friday, May 24 CLOWNS LIKE ME performance. This is an awesome partnership we’re starting with Live Tampa Bay. Check them out. The work they do is powerful.
And now I gotta get back to prepping for rehearsal. See you at the Cook Theatre on the FSU/Asolo campus next week!
